Malaysia Social Media Statistics

Malaysia Social Media Statistics

Malaysia Social Media Statistics

Many have been wondering what the social media statistics have been for Malaysia and in this article, I have taken the imitative to highlight some of Malaysia's Social Media Statistics for 2012. However, I would also like to mention thar Social Media Travel is also one of the important factors that contribute to this statistics apart from the general online community.

The statistics below have been taken from various companies who have done the research and the numbers below are based on the year 2012. Companies include eMarketerWe Are SocialNielsen and comScore. Here are some of the Malaysia Social Media Statistics for 2012;
    • Malaysia has 34 Million mobile subscribers and 17.5 Million Internet users
    • 87.9% of Malaysians on the Internet access Facebook
    • There are currently 13.3 Million Facebook users in Malaysia (July 2013). Those aged between 18 and 24 are the highest users, contributing 34.5 per cent followed by those aged 25-34 years (29.5 per cent) and 13-17 years (16.3 per cent)
    • 80% of Malaysian Internet users stream or download videos each month
    • 51% of Malaysians have an active YouTube profile
    • Malaysian Internet users spend nearly 20 hours per week online
    • Malaysian Internet users spend 10.6 hours watching Broadcast TV
    • Malaysia's mobile penetration is more than 100%, compared to 59% for Internet and 41% for social media
    • YouTube accounts for 67% of all online videos viewed in Malaysia, out of an audience of 9.3 Million
    • Social networking, at 32.1%, holds the largest share of online minutes for those in Malaysia, followed by 11.5% for entertainment
    • Of the 11.5 Million people ages 15 and older who access the Internet from home or work in Malaysia, 92.4% visit Google sites
    • Social Media accounts for 1/3 of all time spent online in Malaysia
    • Currently there are 17.5 Million Internet Users in Malaysia (2012) and in 2016, there will be 21 Million users

As we are in the core of the digital era now, more and more people are being introduced into the current technology. Social Media Travel has also seen a huge rise in Malaysia compared to just a few years ago but then again, many are still in the early infant stage of this era. While many people think that Social Media is Free, they are unlikely to part with advertising dollars in this new digital medium that is taking the country by storm. Those who have jumped on the band wagon have a head start while those who have not will be considered late comers.

However, if you look at the larger corporations, they have already embraced social media as one of the new marketing tools as the numbers and statistics above have now made a difference in Malaysia. It is only a matter of time before this medium becomes a must-have for all businesses.I hope that you found this article interesting and if you have any comments or new statistics, please feel free to note them here and I can update the latest on Malaysia Social Media Statistics.

SSM: Display your business name & registration number on your Facebook Page

SSM: Display your business name & registration number on your Facebook Page

We have reported last year that every e-commerce businesses need to display their business name and registration number on their website, starting from 1 July 2013 (enforced by Malaysia Consumer Protection Regulations 2012).

Did you know that you need to do so too on your Facebook Page?

Yes, some online merchants have alerted us on this matter recently, that Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM, or Companies Commission of Malaysia), has started to crack down on some online merchants on Facebook. It also seems that fashion merchants are the firsts on their screening radar now.

See below the letter of notice, which an online merchant has shared with us.

It is stated in the letter of notice that the merchant has defaulted Companies Act 1965 by failing to display company name and / or company registration number, on its Facebook page.

SSM specifically mentions Section 121(1)(b) that:

    (1) The name of the company (whether or not it is carrying on business under a business name) in legible romanized letters and the company number of the company shall appear on
    (b) all business letters, statements of account, invoices, official notices, publications, bills of exchange, promissory notes, endorsements, cheques, orders, receipts and letters of credit of or purporting to be issued or signed by or on behalf of, the company,
and if default is made in complying with this subsection the company shall be guilty of an offence against this Act.

Failure of complying the above will result into penalty of not more than RM5,000, which the defaulter has to take action within 30 days from the letter of notice.

Do you need to display company info on Facebook ad creative?

When we first saw the letter, we are a little confused (just like the merchant) as this is originated from SSM's observation on the merchant's advertisement / publications on Facebook. The question is, do we need to display company details on the ad creative?

Besides that, the only thing we can relate from Section 121(1)(b) above are publications and penyiaran (broadcasting), so this letter is quite vague on what action(s) need to be done.

Read also: Understanding e-commerce legislation in Malaysia

We ended up making a call to SSM to clarify this matter, and the feedback from SSM officer is to display your company name and registration number on your Facebook Page, for example in the "about" section.

Still not clear? You can refer to some of the live examples on selected fashion merchants (who have complied) below.

So, if you are an online merchant (or basically running any kind of business) with a Facebook Page, do act now by displaying your business name and registration number, before SSM comes knocking at your door!

5 SEO Trends Every Entrepreneur Needs to Know for 2014

5 SEO Trends Every Entrepreneur Needs to Know for 2014

"Is SEO dead?" It's a common question within the online marketing world today.
If you're an entrepreneur relying on a strong online presence to connect with customers, you're right to pay attention. It's undeniable that the SEO landscape is changing.
For instance, Google is taking a hardline approach. Shady link-building tactics (think Rap Genius), poor quality content and bad design are just a few of the factors causing websites to get penalized. So what's worked for your business in the past may no longer work, and in fact, could actually hurt your business now.
Today, successful SEO strategies have to incorporate diverse components including brand building, mobile optimization, content marketing and social media integration. It's time to adapt your strategy to address these realities. Here's a closer look at five trends that will shape your SEO success in the year ahead.
    1. Effective SEO has three pillars. A strong SEO strategy has three core components: links, content and social media. What's become more pronounced in the last year is the relationship between these elements. Content must be laser focused on your audience's needs and honed to drive specific profit-generating actions. Social media amplifies your reach, signaling to search engines that users find your content valuable. Links from high quality sites also reinforce that you're a solid, trustworthy site. A virtuous cycle is starting to emerge that all begins with writing great content.
    2. The rise of content marketing moves toward digital maturity. Content marketing was the top marketing buzzword of 2013, and it's a trend that's here to stay. Brands need to become savvy about telling their own stories and creating content that resonates with audiences. As the initial fascination with content marketing wears off, marketers are now demanding more return on investment, or ROI. Content marketing is maturing, and as a result we're better able to effectively target content, measure performance and correct course to improve results.
    3. Mobile optimization is no longer optional. With the release of Google's Hummingbird updates, it's getting harder for sites without a mobile strategy to rank well. This includes both a responsive design and a mobile content strategy. Realistically, it's time to invest in this anyway from a business perspective: Half of Americans own smartphones and more than a third own tablets according to Pew Internet. Responsive design ensures that your site looks great across a range of mobile devices. A mobile content strategy targets your content to the context, needs and behaviors of mobile users. To learn more about post-Hummingbird mobile optimization, readThe Key Ingredients to a Winning Mobile Content-Marketing Strategy.
    4. Building your brand is more important than building links. A strong brand is playing an increasingly important role in SEO. One tangible example is Google's introduction and emphasis of Google Authorship, a program that connects content to your author profile with recognized authors' content performing better in search engine results. Building your brand and thought leadership in your space are critical steps to ranking well over time. For help building and implement a branding strategy, see this collection of resources.
    5. Social media, especially Google Plus, plays an integrated role with SEO. Google is relying more than ever on human signals in the form of shares and mentions on social media to help vet sites. If you don't have a strong social media marketing presence and a strategy that makes it easy for people to share your content, it's time to implement one (for help with that, I recommend "How to Determine Which Social Media Network Fits Your Business."
Social media has matured to the point where it's intersecting with SEO to help determine search rankings. Two easy places to start are building your Google Plus presence and ensuring that your website and blog have content sharing modules built in.
As you're developing your company's SEO plan, remember that all these trends add up to two things: integration and balance. Invest in all the key areas -- from writing good content, to building links and developing your social platforms -- with the understanding that they mutually support each other. Customize your plan by identifying your company's gaps and opportunity, and focus on the channels that bring you closer to your audience. Good search engines rankings will follow.
